Sagem Picks Ikanos Technology for IPTV Gateway
TMCnet Contributing Editor

The technology used in Ikanos Communications’ residential gateway products has been integrated into Sagem Communications' (News - Alert) residential gateway. This includes the Fusiv Vx160 processor, the VoIP engine, and the multi-mode VDSL2/ADSL2+ chipsets from Ikanos, used in Sagem’s F@st 3464 product.

F@st 3464 is a high performance residential gateway platform for boosting IPTV (News - Alert) performance via service-aware quality of service (QoS).

Sagem Communications’ gateway is now being used as the customer premises equipment (CPE) for a major European carrier's next-generation VDSL2 access network, which is capable of delivering high definition (HD) IPTV.

Ikanos (News - Alert) Communications is a provider of advanced broadband semiconductor and software products for the digital home.

"Ikanos gave us a significant time-to-market advantage with its comprehensive and highly integrated silicon and software products," said Ahmed Selmani, managing director of the residential terminals business unit at Sagem Communications, in a statement.  "Ikanos' full-featured residential gateway solution delivers the industry's highest level of performance and scalability and supports the evolving high-value broadband services carriers want to provide to their customers."

Ikanos said its products provide a faultless upgrade from ADSL2+ to VDSL2 without the added expense of a future truck roll. This is because they are designed with multi-mode VDSL2/ADSL2+ capability that are not dependant on the core central office (CO) technology.

According to the company, Ikanos’ Fusiv processor is built with distributed Accelerator Processor (News - Alert) (AP) architectures. These APs can perform advanced triple play and quality of service functions by offloading broadband wireless local area network (WLAN) bridging, routing, and switching and firewall functions from the host central processing unit (CPU).

Ikanos’ relationship with Sagem also includes VDSL2 platforms for the digital home.
