Delphi and Autonet Mobile to Provide OEMs with Internet Connectivity Products
TMCnet Contributing Editor

Soon Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) in the automotive industry will be making use of the Internet connectivity technology products from Delphi and Autonet Mobile, according to the companies.

The two companies will also be providing demonstration vehicles equipped with their newly developed technology for OEMs and consumer market testing.

Autonet Mobile is the first Internet Service Provider designed exclusively for cars. They have built a network that enables car drivers armed with Wi-Fi enabled devices to be connected to the internet at broadband speeds.

Delphi is a supplier of mobile electronics and transportation systems, including powertrain, safety, steering, thermal, and controls & security systems, electrical/electronic architecture, and in-car entertainment technologies.

According to the officials, this partnership brings together the companies’ expertise on providing telematics and in-car entertainment products using Internet-based media services.

Delphi says that their products are aimed at satisfying customer demand for access to net while driving just like in home or at office. OEMs will also be getting products that would help them boost their revenues.

"Customers want flexibility and convenience while they are in their vehicles," said Tom Puza, managing director of telematics at Delphi Electronics & Safety Division. "We believe our experience in providing electronics products that withstand tough automotive environments and our expertise in electronics systems integration of hardware and software will be valuable in taking this technology to the next level with OEM customers."

The ‘infosyncworld’ site explains how internet can be accessed from the car through Delphi Autonet Mobile. The technology is stated to have solved the problem of accessing the net from the cars traveling at high speeds. The web connection is provided via a CDMA data connection, the software manages TCP sessions in-motion, up to 120 mph. The device also includes a networked and shareable 32GB hard drive for storing files and playing media. Propriety applications provide maps, media playback and even access to home DVR boxes.

Autonet Mobile feels that the products designed from their partnership with Delphi will provide automotive manufacturers a chance to reap the benefits from the market of downloadable content and Internet media services. They also claim that providing Internet for the car will change the face of in-car entertainment products and services provided by the automotive industry.
